In the heart of Copenhagen, on Marmormolen, stands a distinguished 45,000 m² headquarters for the United Nations. This remarkable star-shaped building, completed in two phases of 28,000 m² and 17,000 m², graces the entrance to the Copenhagen Harbor. On July 4, 2013, UN City was officially inaugurated, with the second phase delivered to the UN on January 1, 2014.


The completed structure has been entrusted to a consortium comprising By & Havn, ATP, and PensionDanmark. Encompassing 45,000 m² of office space and 7,000 m² of technical and storage facilities in the basement, the building also features an auditorium accommodating 450 guests.

Sustainable Practices

This iconic building employs innovative sustainability practices. Rainwater is utilized in the restrooms, and the building’s cooling system is powered by seawater. All lighting is technically controlled, ensuring optimal energy efficiency. The UN City is constructed as an Energy Class 1 building, indicating a climate-conscious structure using less than 50 kWh per m² per year for heating.

Green Energy Initiatives

Embracing renewable energy, the building boasts a solar panel system on its roof. The construction, situated on a purpose-built island, currently hosts 920 employees with future-proof planning for accommodating up to 2,000 individuals. UN City Copenhagen serves as a beacon of sustainability, showcasing a harmonious blend of architectural brilliance and environmental responsibility.
